New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
